What is breast implant removal?

Breast implants, while long-lasting, are not permanent. They typically last about 10-15 years. Sometimes breast implants rupture, ripple, or leak and need to be replaced, while other times complications such as capsular contracture or BII (Breast Implant Illness) necessitate the complete removal of the implants. Lastly, some women undergo breast explant because they change their minds about their aesthetic preferences and desire a less dramatic increase in cup size.

How is breast implant removal performed?

Breast implant removal is typically performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. The procedure involves addressing the breast capsule or pocket, which may be riddled with scar tissue. Incisions are usually placed within the breast crease (inframammary fold). If needed, Dr. Engineer can perform a breast lift or fat transfer procedure to enhance your results and ensure the chest appears natural, feminine, and balanced after implant removal.

Why do women seek out breast implant removal?

There are a variety of reasons to seek out a breast explanation in Las Vegas.

  • Some patients are seeking to increase or decrease the size of their implants, or they wish to forgo implants altogether and return to their former breast size. Our vision of our best self may change, and Dr. Engineer’s mission is to enact the safest tactics to attain your ideal outcome.
  • Some patients may have experienced complications, such as the development of hard, painful scar tissue. With his expertise in breast implant removal, Dr. Engineer can resolve such issues.
  • Sometimes the implants shift and migrate, resulting in such problems as symmastia and other malpositions.
  • Implants may rupture or leak, necessitating their removal.
  • If you have textured implants, you may wish to replace them or undergo explantation due to the recent FDA report linking textured implants to breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).

Most patients choose to replace their implants rather than remove them completely in order to maintain an enhanced physique. Dr. Engineer will spend time with you during your personal consultation to fully understand your intentions. He will exercise the full weight of his training and experience in order to create the most appropriate surgical plan for your specific needs and goals.

Breast Implant Removal FAQ

How long will my procedure take?

Breast implant removal typically takes 1-3 hours, depending on the degree of scar tissue in the capsule, whether the implants leaked or ruptured, and whether breast lift or fat transfer is performed at the same time as the explant.

What will my scars be like?

Usually Dr. Engineer is able to use the same incision to remove the implants as was used to insert them, i.e., the inframammary fold incision. This will prevent additional scarring. If this is not possible, then Dr. Engineer will do his utmost best to minimize your scars from new incisions. If the new incision is placed surrounding the nipple, scarring will be well-hidden in the darker pigments of the areola.

Does insurance cover breast implant removal?

Insurance companies will only cover procedures they deem medically necessary. In cases where silicone gel implants ruptured and are causing pain, part or all of the procedure may be covered by insurance. The same holds true for more serious cases of capsular contracture. Lastly, if an infection or Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) occurs, the insurance company may compensate you. For all other conditions, it is best to just consult with your insurance carrier and find out their policy.
